The Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East project, spanning from Cheltenham to Box Hill, aims to transform Melbourne’s public transport system by providing cross-suburb transport to key destinations. This project will deliver significant social and economic benefits to the local community. SRL East involves the construction of twin 26km rail tunnels, six new underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton (a major interchange station), Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood, and Box Hill, as well as a stabling yard at Heatherton. Construction began in 2022, with trains expected to be operational by 2035.
THE INITIAL WORKS AND EARLY WORKS (IWEW) PACKAGE INCLUDED:
- Relocation and protection of utilities
- Site establishment works
- Road and tram modifications
- Ground improvement trials
- Construction of two Tunnel Access Shafts (TAS)
- Construction of a Traffic and Utilities bridge
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION TASKS FOR THE TAS INCLUDED:
- Full-depth excavation of the TAS in
five stages to a total depth of 19.2m, including the construction of a hardstand at each excavation drop - Installation of a fully compatible and operational pumping system at the bottom of the shaft
- Installation of a temporary dewatering system to facilitate earthworks and excavation progress
- Installation of a rock anchor system to support future Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) works
- Design and construction of a temporary ventilation system
Construction commenced in 2024, with project completion scheduled for early 2025.
In July 2024, Cycon Civil Group began work on the SRL Burwood Tunnel Access Shaft project. Their responsibilities included the delivery, design (where applicable), supply, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover of the earthworks for the Tunnel Access Shaft (TAS) structure at Burwood (BUW), including all necessary temporary works to facilitate these tasks. Cycon worked closely with the project delivery team to overcome design and construction challenges, focusing on detailed planning and a skilled workforce to deliver the project on time and within budget, while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
