SRL Burwood - Tunnel Access Shaft

In July 2024, Cycon Civil Group commenced working on the SRL Burwood Tunnel Access Shaft project undertaking the full scope of delivery, design (where applicable), supply, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover of the earthworks of the Tunnel Access Shaft (TAS) structure at Burwood (BUW) including all necessary Temporary Works to facilitate the works. Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East between Cheltenham and Box Hill will deliver cross-suburb transport to key destinations, helping transform Melbourne's public transport system and delivering enormous social and economic benefits to the local community. SRL East involves twin 26km rail tunnels, six new underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton (major interchange station), Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill; as well as a stabling yard at Heatherton. Construction started in 2022 and trains will be running by 2035.

The Initial Works and Early Works (IWEW) package includes relocation and protection of utilities, site establishment works, road and tram modifications, ground improvement trials, construction of two Tunnel Access Shafts (TAS) and construction of a Traffic and Utilities bridge.

Design and construction works include:

  • Full depth excavation of the TAS under 5 stages to a total depth of 19.2m including construction of a hardstand at each excavation drop.

  • Installation of a fully compatible and operational pumping system at the bottom of the shaft

  • Installation of a temporary dewatering system to facilitate earthworks and excavation progress

  • Installation of rock anchor system to facilitate future TBM works.

  • Design and construction of a temporary ventilation system

Construction commenced in 2024 with the project scheduled to be complete in early 2025.

Cycon works closely with the project delivery team to overcome design and construction challenges with a focus on detail planning and skilled workforce to deliver the project in time and within budget while ensuring high safety and quality standards are maintained.
